Chapter three

These words echoed through Nicole’s psyche an hour later, as she found herself once again within the confines of her modest, clean lined loft apartment; collapsing in the depths of her simple, comfy wood boarded camp bed as she forced her eyes shut.

All she needed, she mused, was a nice, refreshing nap; something to soothe her heated, addled mind—as well as a body that was full on fire.

Charlotte Mabry, she decided, was nothing more than a devil woman; an evil temptress sent to torment her. And the only way that she could resist her was by staying well and clear of the woman who messed with her mind and heart.

Once she settled her mind and body by way of a nice, quiet, fortifying nap, then she could turn her attention to her next project: a landscaping job that she would perform for—interestingly enough—a gay male couple who lived just off Miami Beach.

“No danger there,” she mused, adding with a chuckle, “With two males as bosses, I can keep my mind on my work.”

Nicole performed a major face palm as she realized that—for all intents and purposes—she’d just proven Charlotte’s point.

“Blast her,” she mused, burying her head in her hands as her heart pounded its frustration. “I just have to find some way to get her out of my mind.”

As if on cue her cellular phone rang forth from the depths of her jeans pocket; creating as it did a not entirely unpleasant sensation that did absolutely nothing to help matters. Blast it.

Fishing her shiny metallic phone from her pocket and hitting the talk button, she held it up to her ear and said, “Nicole, here.”

“Nicole!” Charlotte’s soft, accented voice sounded unusually shrill as she greeted her addled gardener. “You’ve got to come back here, quick! Some bizarre, unsightly creature has invaded my wading pool, and I don’t know what to do. Please come and help.”

The worry and urgency lining Charlotte’s tones struck fear in Nicole’s heart. She just barely managed the words, “I’ll be right there!” before racing for the door.

Moments later she found herself once again standing in the garden she’d just constructed; racing through the twists and turns of its maze like path as endless and very disturbing possibilities invaded her mine.

What if the creature that Charlotte described took the form of a snake? A water mollusk? An alligator, even? She would not allow her princess to come to any sort of harm; she just had to rescue her from whatever foul creature sought to infiltrate their secret garden.

“Charlotte!” she gasped out, her fast feet speeding her with haste in the direction of the wading pond. “Where are you? Are you all right?”

She stopped stock still seconds later, as she beheld a sight that stole her breath; the vision of a mermaid in repose against a lush tropical backdrop.

Although she recognized all too readily the flowing blonde hair, wide dark eyes, and flawless features of this particular siren, she was less familiar with the makeshift, emerald green
